Funnel Maps

Often in business we have an outline idea of the thing that we want to achieve but we don’t always have a clear understanding of how we get there or the things we need to do to make that happen.

You might want to sell a training course you have created or collect leads for your new coaching program and you can't think of the best way to do it or how all the pieces of that puzzle come together.

The perfect solution for these scenarios is our Funnel maps. Our Funnel Maps give a clear visual explanation of the types of funnels you should use, where you should use them and how to use them for different markets such as affiliate marketing.

Our Funnel Maps will help you in all types of business scenarios from building a list of subscribers right through to selling a product. We have created them to give you a perfect framework to work with. You can either use these funnels exactly as they are, they are proven to work, our you can adapt them to work for your business scenarios by adding or deleting funnels steps.

To help you find the easiest way forward we have simplified these into four main funnel map categories:

These funnels work well for all types of niches and marketplaces. To help you think of ways a Funnel Map can work for your business we have also listed some suggestions on how they can work for the main niche markets such as authors, coaches, business services and affiliates.

Lead Generation Funnels

Funnel Type: Lead Magnet

With a lead magnet funnel, you give away a lead magnet in exchange for the visitor's email address. The visitor then becomes a subscriber to your email list, and you then continue to nurture a relationship with the subscriber and move them into other further funnels that promote products.

As you can see in the diagram below the visitor arrives at your landing page, and after opt-in, are taken to the confirmation page. The confirmation page step is optional if you are using double optin and can be removed from the funnel flow if single optin is your preferred method.

A confirmation email is sent to your new subscriber for them to confirm their email address and once confirmed they are forwarded to the download page to download their lead magnet.

It would be best if you then started a series of nurture emails over several days to build a relationship with the new subscriber.

Strategy Tip: Quality v's Quantity

Your lead magnets do not always need to extensive expert guides. The main aim of your lead magnet is to provide a solution for your primary target audience. Simple lead magnets like a checklist or cheat sheet can be just as valuable to your subscribers as full 100-page guides.

Recommended OptimizeFunnels Funnel- Client Success

You'll find this funnel in the List Building Funnels category > Lead Magnet Funnels.

How to Use Lead Magnet Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

In this funnel, you would give away a lead magnet that teaches a small segment of the main niche content your primary products offer.

Sales / eCommerce

In a lead magnet funnel for the sales and eCommerce industry, you could offer buyers guides to choosing the right product or a purchase discount coupon.

Affiliate Marketing

For affiliate marketing, your lead magnet should provide condensed information linked to the main product you sell. Ideally, lead magnets such as cheat sheets or checklists, that give quick wins.

Business & Services

Your lead magnet should give guidance on topics related to the primary service your business offers. So for example, if you are a local small business in the cleaning industry, you could provide a list of top tips related to house cleaning, or if you are in the dentistry industry, you might offer a guide to teeth hygiene.

Funnel Type: Application Funnels

The pages in an application funnel are similar to most lead generation funnels as they often include a landing page and thank you page. The main difference is that with an application funnel you are asking for more information from subscribers than the standard name and email address. The focus with application funnels is much more on quality leads more so than quantity of leads.

What makes application funnels different is that the main aim is to gain more information and additional insights from your prospects. You can then use this data to better review applicants or to provide personal segmentation later in the sales sequence based on the information provided to you.

Application funnels are perfect funnels for if you want to promote a mastermind, mentoring, high end coaching or consulting services. These types of funnels can be used on the front end for brand new prospects but are generally more effective when used on existing subscribers where a relationship already exists.  It is common for application funnels to be used for the promotion of high ticket or personal service products.

As your application funnel has more steps that the subscriber has to go through to complete the application, you generally know that you have a more invested subscriber. Therefore there is a higher chance of conversion to a customer.

Strategy Tip: Importance and Scarcity

Application funnels help to build a unique sense of importance with subscribers. Having to complete an application creates the feeling that "this product or service must be special, you have to apply to join it". This special sense creates scarcity, and that helps to increase conversions.

You'll find this funnel in the List Building Funnels category > Application Funnels.

How to Use Application Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

If you are a speaker or coach, you could use application funnels to validate opportunities. If an individual or company wants to hire your services, you could put them through an application process to verify how serious they are and assess the type of results they want you to deliver.

Sales / eCommerce

Application funnels are great for selling your higher ticket products. Your application page should showcase a wide range of testimonials and case studies from previous clients.

Affiliate Marketing

You could use application funnels to get affiliates into your referral partner program. When reviewing applicants, you are looking for details about other products potential affiliates have successfully promoted, their social media followings and subscriber list size.

Business & Services

Application funnels could be used for existing customers to reward them for their loyalty. You could request that they complete an application to receive your special bonus offers and limited-time special customer discount sales.

Funnel Type: Waitlist Funnel

Is your business looking to launch a new product or service? If so, then a waitlist funnel is a very powerful funnel to implement in your business. A waitlist is a list of subscribers that have shown a committed interest in your new product offering.

The first page in your waitlist funnel is your opt-in page. On your opt-in page, you must promote the key benefits of your new product or service. The aim is to get visitors to subscribe for early updates and notifications on the release of your new product. After opt-in subscribers then land on your thank you page where you confirm their subscription for early bird updates.

The key business benefit of this type of funnel is that you are building a confirmed list of people who have an elevated interest in your new service and these people are the ones most likely to buy from you.

A strategy you could try on your thank you page is to sell discounted early bird access to the product. Pre-purchasing gives customers discounted access to your new product when it is ready and can help you to generate pre-launch revenue to fund the final development phase.

If your product is in the beta phase, selling early bird discounted access can help you to get vital user experience data and customer testimonials.

Strategy Tip: Keep In Contact

It's essential to keep in constant contact with your waitlist subscribers to keep them updated. If you don't keep waitlist subscribers engaged, they will lose interest before you release your product. It's important to make subscribers feel special, and that being on your waitlist means they are an exclusive group.

How to Use Wait List Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

Waitlist funnels are popular in this sector. Ahead of the release of your new product, coaching program or event, you should build a waitlist, engage them and sell them on early bird discounts.

Sales / eCommerce

For your waitlist funnel, you should try sending out new product demos and samples to build excitement for product releases and get feedback from your audience.

Affiliate Marketing

Most affiliate marketing products supply the resources you need to build waitlists for forthcoming product releases. If they don't, it is worth investing in creating your waitlist resources. New product releases usually come with a lot of hype, and you want to capitalise on that income opportunity.

Business & Services

If you are planning to release a new service, the people most likely to buy from you are existing customers. You should create an "early access" campaign around a waitlist funnel and focus the angle around "getting first access" or "getting discounted access".

Sales Funnels

Funnel Type: Simple Sales funnel

The simple sales funnel is the core sales funnel in most businesses. These funnels usually consist of just a few pages and are easy to setup. Most companies start with a simple sales funnel and expand to more complex sales funnel structures as they create additional product offerings.

Your simple sales funnel starts with a sales page, which is linked to a checkout page for visitors to complete their purchase. After purchase, the new customer gets forwarded to the order confirmation page where they get an order summary and access to their purchased product.

On your sales page, the critical objective is to sell the benefits of your product, address any apprehension your buyer might have and build their confidence.

The design of your sales page can take a wide range of formats. Depending on the niche and product offered for sale, a short video sales letter can work equally as well at converting sales as a long-form text rich page.

The most common elements to include on your sales page are video, product images, customer testimonials, purchase guarantees, bonuses and case studies.

Strategy Tip: Try adding an Order Bump.

Using the order bump feature in OptimizeCheckouts, you can promote order bump products to your prospects. Order bumps are the easiest way for you to boost revenue by increasing your average order value. By offering a low-cost order bump product that is complementary to the primary product purchase, you can increase the value of each sale.

How to Use Simple Sales Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

With this type of funnel, you usually are selling your primary product offering. In the speaker/coach/author sector, main products are typically high ticket so before sending traffic to your sales funnel you should build an initial relationship by providing value with lead magnets and educational content.

Sales / eCommerce

In this funnel, you will be selling your main product. Your primary choice is whether you are going to sell your products individually on their own sales pages or if you are going to have a shopping cart where you have multiple products listed for sale at one time.

Affiliate Marketing

With affiliate products, you would typically send your traffic directly from your free or paid traffic source to the affiliate products sales page. If you want to have more control over the process and offer a mix of different affiliate products, you could build out your own sales funnel. If you talk directly with the product owner, you can create a process for fulfilling completed orders that come through your funnel.

Business & Services

For a simple sales funnel in the services and business category, you would be selling your primary product offering. A simple sales funnel would typically be the main entry point into customers purchasing your services. On your sales page, you want to showcase successful results of people using your services and also handle all the objections as to why your service is better than the alternatives in the marketplace.

Funnel Type: Entry Point Offer Funnels

Statistics show that one of the most engaged points in your relationship with your subscribers is at the moment after they have just subscribed to your list. With this in mind, it makes sense that promoting a product or service at this early stage could be highly effective.

We call this an entry point offer and an entry point offer is usually a low priced front end offer that is easy for new subscribers to commit to and accept.

Here is how an entry point offer works:

You offer a lead magnet on your landing page and then directly after opt-in you present your entry point offer on the entry point offer page (in a traditional lead gen funnel this would be your thank you page). Your subscriber will have the initial lead magnet details emailed to them, and the main focus of the entry point offer is to sell your entry point product.

Your entry point offer could be a low monthly subscription or a one-time payment product. Depending on your business niche and product type, a typical entry point offer should be priced between $19 to $49.

There are two main benefits of entry point offers:

Your entry point offer should complement your lead magnet. This means it should be a linked subject matter, and it should expand upon the knowledge shared in your lead magnet. So, for example, if your lead magnet was a 10 point checklist for social media marketing, your entry point offer could be a detailed social media guide or short video training course.

Strategy Tip: Entry Point Offer Product

If you don't have a product that would work as an entry point offer, we highly recommend you make one. Focus on providing value in your entry point offer as this will enhance the buyer's confidence in buying from you again when you make your primary product offering.

How to Use Entry Point Offer Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

A good entry point offer in this scenario would be a product that builds your profile with your new subscriber. Such items like high-quality guides or books that you have written will provide value to the customers but also further develop your profile for higher ticket main products later in the sales sequence.

Sales / eCommerce

For your entry point offer, you should offer one of your lower-priced products. This will help to prove that the subscriber is a confirmed buyer and then you can sell further or higher ticket items later in your relationship with them.

Affiliate Marketing

Some affiliate marketing products may have an entry point offer that you can promote. If not,  then the key main options you could use are; 1. Find a complementary product from a different source that you can offer. 2. Create your own entry point offer product and then promote your affiliate products later in the sales sequence.

Business & Services

Your entry point offer is an excellent way to give your prospects an intro into the services you offer. Think of ideas that give your prospects the experience of your product at a low barrier price. For example, suppose you are a cleaning company. In that case, you could promote an entry point offer that gives away a discounted cleaning opportunity so customers can see the power of your cleaning products.

Funnel Type: Coupon Funnel

Coupon and discount offers are popular thanks to browser apps like Honey and websites like Groupon and Wowcher. Using a coupon funnel, you can get yourself in on the action.

The flow of these funnels is simple. You have a landing page offering access to exclusive discounts or coupon codes in exchange for the visitors subscribing. After optin, the new subscriber is taken through to the thank you page where they will get access to the discount/coupon code.

Prospects that subscribe for coupon and discount codes pre-qualify a level of intent to purchase as they are looking for discounts. You should continue to follow up with the new subscriber and share other offers and deals.

These types of funnel work well as evergreen campaigns you can run for current subscribers or prospects from paid traffic.

Strategy Tip: Update your coupons

As subscribers are likely to share coupon and discount codes, it is a good idea to update them regularly to keep a continuous flow of new subscribers.

Give away coupons to your prospects that offer them a percentage off or monetary value discount on a product purchase.

Sales / eCommerce

For the products, you sell you should offer coupons for special offers and seasonal sales.

Affiliate Marketing

Coupon funnels for products you affiliate are typically going to be given to you by the product owner to help you boost conversions on your affiliate traffic.

If you want to offer your own form of coupon code for an affiliate product, this is usually going to redeemed directly from you. So for example, you might offer your subscribers a coupon for bonus items that they redeem from you after they have purchased the affiliate product you promote.

Business & Services

Promote coupon funnels to your existing customers that encourage them to re-use your services to increase the number of repeat buyers in your business. Repeat buyers are generally more profitable as there is little cost to acquire the customer.

Funnel Type: One page Sales Funnel

One Page funnels are one of our favourite funnels as they do everything you need to make sales all on one page. On the sales page, you will promote your product, share case studies, present your sales pitch, promote bonuses, answer frequently asked questions and provide the checkout to take payments.

The key benefits of a one page sales funnel are;

a - you only have a few pages to manage in the funnel which saves time and makes life easier.

b - the process of purchasing is easier for customers as it is straightforward for them as there are limited pages to visit and navigate.

Both of these benefits lead to high conversions and increased sales revenue.

There are actually two pages in a one-page funnel (bare with me and I'll explain). The second page in the funnel is the checkout confirmation page where you will provide the purchase summary and product downloads. Even with this additional page, this funnel is still incredibly simple and well worth adding to your business.

A simple sales funnel would typically be the main entry point into customers purchasing your services. On your sales page, you want to showcase successful results of people using your services and also handle all the objections as to why your service is better than the alternatives in the marketplace.

Funnel Type: Upsell/Downsell Funnels

Upsell/Downsell funnels are the ultimate sales funnels for generating additional revenue for your business. The people most likely to buy from you are those that have already spent money with you.  Upsell/downsell funnels capitalise on this proven theory by presenting an offer to customers after they complete their primary purchase.

An upsell/downsell funnel works the same as any traditional sales funnel. It starts with a sales page which is linked to a checkout page. After your new customer completes the initial checkout, that's where things are different. Rather than have an order confirmation page after the checkout, this is where you present your upsell Offer. Your upsell Offer is presented on a dedicated page. It works best as an offer that compliments the original purchase or an upgrade to a higher tier or better product. Your new customer has the option to accept the upsell or decline and keep just the original purchased item.

The great thing about upsell/downsell funnels in OptimizePress is that using our dedicated element the credit card information is held from the original purchase. The upsell purchase is charged automatically without the customer having to re-enter their payment details. This increases conversions and ensures the maximum revenue for your business.

If your customer doesn't accept the upsell product, an additional sales method is to offer what is called a downsell. A downsell product, much like the upsell, is a complimentary product to the original purchase but at a lower level/cost. Downsells work well for customers that might be more price sensitive.

Strategy Tip: Limit Your Upsells / Downsells

Upsell and downsell funnels are highly effective at generating additional income, and we recommend that you test adding them to your sales funnels. We also recommend that you use upsell/downsell funnels respectfully and not bombard new customers with a constant stream of offers and promotions.

Upsell products for this niche are targeted around enhanced learning and increased personal service. Upsell product examples would include private mentoring or VIP mastermind groups.

Sales / eCommerce

Upsell offers for this niche would be products that complement the primary product purchase. As an example, if you sell writing pens, then upsell products could be, pen cases or pen refills.

Affiliate Marketing

Upsell products for your affiliate promotions could be either additional affiliate products or products you create yourself. Ideal Upsell products for affiliate marketing are those that help the customer elevate their use of the primary product purchase.

Business & Services

Upsell products in this niche are all about increasing the level of service your business offers to customers. As examples, your upsell products could be premium add-ons, uplift services, VIP packages or extra care services.

Funnel Type: Pre-Cart Offer Funnels

Pre-Cart offer funnels are great for increasing your average order value. A pre-cart offer is your chance to sell your prospects on additional services and products that complement their primary purchase.

Higher average order value = more revenue. 😎

Here's how a pre-cart offer funnel works:

Your prospects arrive on your sales page and decide to purchase your product, the next page they see in your funnel is a pre-cart sales offer. This page is placed before the main checkout.

On the pre-cart sales offer page you sell a product that elevates the original purchase such some bonus training or a membership subscription. Your prospect has the option to add the pre-cart offer or decline and stick with only the original purchase.

The rest of the funnel continues as per a simple sales funnel with the checkout page to process the order and then the order confirmation page with the customers order details.

Please note: Depending on the type of products you are selling you might need two versions of your checkout page. A page for if the customer selects just the main product and the other page for if they take the main product and the pre-cart Offer.

The good news is that this is easy to organise in OptimizeFunnels!

Strategy Tip: Split Test Your Pre-Cart Offer Funnels

If you decide to use a pre-cart offer funnel, then we recommend you test them against a standard sales funnels. Introducing a pre-cart offer can in some cases lead to increases in cart abandons as you are adding an extra purchase step. You should, however, find that a slight increase in cart abandonment is significantly offset by the increased revenue the pre-cart offer generates.

How to Use Pre-Cart Offer Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

Business & Services

Your pre-cart offer is an excellent way to give your prospects an intro into the services you offer. Think of ideas that give potential customers the experience of your product at a low barrier price. For example, suppose you are a cleaning company. In that case, you could promote a pre-cart offer that gives away a discounted cleaning opportunity so customers can see the power of your cleaning products.

Event Funnels

Funnel Type: Live Webinar funnel

The main benefit of live webinars funnels is more contact time with your prospects, subscribers and customers. Live webinars are hosted live on a set day and time.

Webinar funnels are great for selling because they give you more time to showcase the benefits of your product and to address the challenges that your product helps the attendees overcome. You also have the opportunity to take questions live from potential buyers which can help to increase conversions.

The structure of your webinar funnel typically starts with a webinar registration page where your visitors subscribe to reserve a seat for the webinar.

Once registered visitors are forwarded to a thank you page. On the thank you page, all of the webinar details are confirmed, such as date/time and webinar room link.

Not every registered attendee will show up for your webinar. To increase webinar attendee rates, you could send your subscribers some pre-webinar content such as initial training.

Your webinar is delivered on a page hosted by your webinar software called a webinar room. In some webinar software, you can embed the webinar into a page you have created and hosted youself.

At the end of the webinar funnel is typically a webinar replay page. On the replay page, you post a replay of the webinar to close more sales from subscribers that registered but did not attend.

Webinars not only work well for selling products but also for delivering education to your subscribers and customers. You can use this same funnel structure to promote training content to your subscribers.

Strategy Tip: Registered but did not attend

Not every one that registers for your webinar will attend. It is worth sending all subscribers that registered for the webinar to a replay of the webinar. Sending out a webinar replay will help to close further sales from those that could not attend.

How to Use Live Webinar Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

Webinar funnels are perfect for this industry/niche area as products are typically at higher price points. A webinar is an ideal format as it gives you more time with potential prospects to handle their objections and sell the many benefits of your product/service.

Sales / eCommerce

If you're business sells individual low price point products, then a webinar funnel might not offer the best return for your time. If it is possible with the products you sell, you could bundle them together to increase the sales margin and make a webinar funnel more profitable and therefore, worth the investment of your time.

Affiliate Marketing

If you're selling higher ticket affiliate products then a webinar funnel would be a great way to build a list of prospects. A webinar gives you time to detail all of the product benefits. An excellent affiliate bonus or additional upsell product would a course or training on how to maximise the potential of the affiliate product that is purchased.

Business & Services

Often when people are looking to use or work with a business, they have lots of questions and want to learn all of the options that the service offers. A webinar allows you the time to detail the services you offer, cover the packages your business has and to share success stories.

Funnel Type: Automated Webinar funnel

Once you have a webinar funnel that works for your business and you have proven it will convert customers, it's an excellent time to consider automating that Webinar.

Automated webinars are pre-recorded and run "like live" using special automated webinar software. With automated webinar software, you upload your pre-recorded webinar file to the platform, and it will run your webinar at the time and dates you setup. Most automated webinar software will manage email notifications and reminders to your registered subscribers.

You can frequently run automated webinars as you do not need to host them live. It's common also to give attendees the option to watch an instant webinar that runs as soon as they subscribe.

The structure of your automated webinar funnel works identically to a live webinar funnel. It starts with a webinar registration page where your visitors subscribe to register a place for the webinar.

Once registered, you have two options for your visitors:

1 - You can forward them directly to the webinar room to watch the webinar recording there and then.

2 - You can forward them to a thank you page. On the thank you page, you confirm all of the webinar details, such as date/time and webinar room link.

To increase webinar attendee rates, you could send your subscribers some pre-webinar content, such as initial training or reminders of the Webinar benefits.

Not every registered subscriber will attend your webinar so you should send them some pre-webinar content to entice them to attend.

After the webinar has run the final part of the automated webinar funnel is typically a webinar replay page. On the replay page, you host a replay of the webinar to close more sales from subscribers that registered but did not attend.

Automated webinars just like live webinars not only work well for selling products but also for delivering education to your subscribers and customers. You can use this same funnel structure to promote training content to your subscribers.

Strategy Tip: Test Automated Webinars

Automated webinars give you the perfect opportunity to split test recordings to attempt to improve your conversions. Remember, when split testing, you should only change one variable at a time. Testing one variable will mean you can quickly pinpoint the exact change that made any positive impact.

Funnel Type: Product Launch funnel

There are various methods for delivering a product launch. Some launches are live, and content gets released at a set date and time. The other typical example of a product launch funnel is the evergreen launch method.

Live Product Launch: A live product launch starts on a set date, and the launch content gets delivered at set times over several days (usually 5 - 7 days). The product launch shopping cart opens on a set date and stays open for a set duration before it closes, and the launch is then complete. Once the launch ends the shopping cart is closed, and the product will not be available for sale.

Evergreen Product Launch: An evergreen launch works similarly to the live product launch, but the evergreen launch doesn't start on a set specific date. Evergreen means that the launch funnel is always live and runs live for a subscriber at the point you decide in their journey with you.

Either funnel can be effective for your business. Live product launches have the big benefit of urgency as all focus gets centred on the live date period and the closing of the shopping cart. Live launches often have the support of promotion partners and affiliates, so get added attention and launch hype from the community in your industry.

An evergreen product launch lacks some of the urgency of a live product launch. However, it has the benefit to your business that you can run it "like live" to each subscriber no matter when they enter your funnel.

Here's how to put together the funnel structure:

You usually start your launch funnel with an opt-in page where your visitors subscribe to get access to the first piece of launch content. This content is typically a video tutorial or lesson of some kind. During the launch phase, you will continue to drip your content out to launch subscribers. Your launch content aims to teach subscribers about the need for a solution to their challenges and then after the launch content has concluded you open up your product for sale.

Strategy Tip: Early Bird Offers

At the end of the launch content phase, it is a good idea to test out an early bird offer. An early bird offer allows people to confirm a serious intent to purchase your product when it releases by subscribing to buy it before it goes live to the general public. This early bird offer allows early access to purchase and usually some discount or an additional bonus for taking action.

How to Use Product Launch Funnels In Your Business

Speaker / Coach / Author

In this type of industry, product launches are very effective. They work great for high ticket products. Using a product launch funnel will allow you to build hype and excitement. A good sales technique is to close the cart after "x" number of days and then build a waitlist for the next launch.

Sales / eCommerce

In this scenario, you could bundle together your products into a special launch package. The bundle package would only be available during the launch phase, never to be repeated.

Affiliate Marketing

Product launches in the affiliate product space are popular. When a product launch is live in your niche, you can drive traffic to it from your email list and paid traffic. You could make a product launch of your own around an affiliate product by making a package that includes the affiliate product and a complimentary training course that you create.

Business & Services

Product launches work well when you have a new service to launch to your customers. Product launches also work well around seasonal offers and holidays special such as "spring clean promotions" or "end of summer sales".

Funnel Type: Live and Virtual Event funnel

Live and virtual events are a great way to provide value to your community and to educate your prospects, subscribers and customers. Hosting an event also helps to raise the profile of you and your business, giving you a position of authority in your industry. At the same time, you are building a community around your product.

The costs of hosting both live and virtual events can be considerable and recouping event expenses and making profits is generally done in a few formats.
