Last year we published a popular post on how you can speed up WordPress on your existing web host. It shows ways you can use plugins to help reduce image loading times, server caching and other valuable information. Some people reported seeing instant increases in site speed when they actioned the tips from that article.

You can read the full post here on how to speed up WordPress and OptimizePress. Still not happy about your site speed? The next option, in most cases, find a better web host!

If you’re new online you may not even be familiar with web hosts – What it is? What do I need if for? What does it do?

The best way to explain how domains and hosts work is to use the house and land analogy. Your domain name is your house and your host is the land and location of where your domain or website lives.

Without a domain name and hosting, you will be unable to run a website you simply need both in order to get started.

When we tell customers it might be time to move host or when we explain you need a hosting provider to run WordPress they ask the obvious question.

Who do you recommend?

With many good web hosts available, it’s impossible for us to test them all.

So we turned to our existing customers and asked the same question.

We posted this on our Facebook page.

The response was amazing and we discovered new hosts that our existing customers were using every day to run high traffic sites.

We collated a full list and selected the top hosts you were using, then began running some tests ourselves. We also asked our own tech support team of WordPress hosting companies what they’ve used and recommended.

After a few discussions in our Slack channel, we came up with a list of features we all look for in a great web host:

Reliability – We wanted to know that a host doesn’t overload shared servers with hundreds of sites and they offer a way to check their server status.

Trust – Have they been around long enough and grown a user base that is not bogging down their support time?

Affordable – Are they affordable for the solution they offer? Everyone has a different price for affordable. Serious business owners don’t consider the price too much. The benefits of a reliable host that offer great support far outweigh the costs.

Server Location – This might not bother some people but there are businesses who like to keep their data in the same country they operate. As briefly mentioned above, the location of your hosting server can determine how responsive your websites are for the end user.

Site speed has especially become a big factor for Google when determining how your website is ranked in their search engines. So if you’re looking for good SEO practices and site responsiveness, a good server location close to your home country would be ideal.

Shared Servers – Shared Servers are generally the most common option most users tend to invest in when first starting out as it’s a cheaper option.

But there are downsides in that your server is shared with other users, which often results in poor performance and restrictions. Because of this, it’s generally best to find a host that is based as close to your home country as possible.

It’s a great starting point as you will easily be able to upgrade to a more powerful solution once your business is up and running.

Exiting OptimizePress Customers – One of the most common questions we’ve received from our customers is selecting a good hosting provider.

Questions such as “Will this host work well with OptimizePress?“. We wanted to know if they host active OptimizePress sites.

Support – Another high priority subject that arises when looking at hosts. Some offer 24hr support, live chat and others even show a response time.

PHP Version – PHP translates as ‘Hypertext Preprocessor’ and is a server scripting language. Its sole purpose is to execute code at server level before it gets sent to the internet.

There are many different versions of PHP available and require version 5.3 or higher in order to run OptimizePress on your websites. Some hosts will have different versions installed, and it’s generally recommended to use one that offers the flexibility to change it.

PHP Modification – We wanted to know if these hosts offer the capability for our users to manage PHP variables themselves or by contacting support.

We know that some hosts restrict settings and have provided a support article that shows how to adjust these settings manually if needed. Knowing how these hosts work will help you make better decisions.

NOTE

It's important that you make your own judgement when choosing a host. Contact their support, ask questions and look at the pricing options for what they offer.

$10-$20 per month is not expensive! Especially if your site is earning you money.
$5 per month is cheap if your site is hosted with hundreds of other sites known as a shared server.
$5 per month is NOT cheap if your site is setup and running on Google's Cloud Network. Try it yourself and then you will realise the complexity of hosting with Google and the value of $5.

I write the above comments to help you look at the benefits of the host and not just the cost.

We have chosen the hosts below based on our customers' experiences and our own testing.

We have a proprietary dashboard that is comparable to CPanel for accomplishing admin-related tasks.

Do you know how many OptimizePress customers use your host?
Not offhand. We would have to query our technical team to figure that out.

** Wild Card **

One of the hosts I wanted to include was Digital Ocean. They offer superior hosting on their cloud servers but they're not a managed hosting solution. You have to build your own server, choose the operating system, choose the location and then use their console to run command line instructions to get WordPress installed. It's way too technical for the majority of people.

The same applies to Amazon's Cloud, the place where our OptimizePress sites are hosted. It's not managed by a simple user interface. You have to know folder structure and commands to install and configure the servers to your desired specification.

We know what you want!

And that's one-click installs to get WordPress up and running fast. Digital Ocean, Amazon and Google have the fast element, but not the one-click installs.

When testing my own site on Digital Ocean, I was amazed at how quick a site responded, so I started looking for companies that do all the technical work for you (a managed solution) and still allow you to use Digital Ocean as a host (for speed).

That's when I found Cloudways.

OptimizePress-hosting-Cloudways

Site: Cloudways.com

Cloudways literally takes away the technical work of building your own server on either Digtal Ocean, Amazon or Google.

It's exactly the same as Tap Hosting above offering a user-friendly way to host on Google's Cloud but Cloudways does it for lots of others cloud networks.

When setting up your first site you choose the cloud company (Digital Ocean), the server location (UK) and they build the server for you.

You can see a full list of features here and more about the managed WordPress options here.

Cloudways will be an overkill for most OptimizePress customers but for those of you who are technical and want a super fast site on your own server that you can scale, this is for you.

I hope you don't mind us including this wild card in the hosting list. We always want to offer solutions for our technical and advanced customers and like me, you might be very frustrated with cheap shared hosts and don't mind testing new server environments.

Our Recommendation:

SiteGround Hosting

As you can see from the list above, there are many different solutions for hosting your website depending on your individual requirements, budget and other factors you might be considering.  We know that many of our users want to know what is the best solution that covers the majority of user requirements when using OptimizePress.

So the final company we're looking at today, is also the one that we recommend.  We've used SiteGround for a number of our own businesses over the past year and found them to provide excellent reliability, features and support, and we strongly recommend them.

siteground-hosting

SiteGround provide a range of packages suitable for all user levels, as well as providing live chat support (we never waited more than 30 seconds for an agent to be online and available in our tests).  We also found that they provide very cost effective solutions without the restrictions of some hosting companies

wow, this post comes in handy. thanks for compiling this.

It’s been a while since I heard a tutorial video done by James. great tutorial!

      • Ian Bass

        Thanks KM… I think it’s been a while since James made a tutorial! ;-)

    • Art Rothafel

Total fan and a testimonial for Lightningbase.com — where we host 27 WordPress sites. Almost all of the reviewed sites have plenty of horsepower and capability. But, for us, regardless of cost, it’s all about TECH SUPPORT!

Response time is typically 20 minutes or less.

And, support has often solved issues that weren’t even their issues – such as plugin compatibility or theme code issues. Highly recommended!

      • David Frosdick

Thanks for sharing that @artrothafel:disqus Hopefully other will share their experience too!

    • NewRiseDigital

I 110% recommend InMotionHosting, their hosting is super fast, incredibly reliable but most of all their support is AMAZING. 24/7 support they fix in depth complicated things for you like updating modsec firewall rules etc, the inmotionhosting support team are some of the most knowledgable guys on the planet, and they’re super friendly too.

I moved to InMotionHosting on their east coast VPS100 service after a really terrible time with Fasthosts in the the UK. Now my sites all run super fast and I never have any issues with them.

Really I don’t work for InMotionHosting, I’ve just had such an incredibly superb experience with them (they have a customer for life in me) after such previous bad hosting from Fasthosts

      • David Frosdick

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experiences.

I’ve been wanting to try InMotion but they didn’t have UK servers last time I checked, only Europe.

        • NewRiseDigital

That’s true they don’t have UK servers but I’ve never found it to be an issue, their east coast servers are the nearest to the UK and are lightning fast. As mentioned it was the out of this world support that swung it for me. Cheers for the great article David!

    • Workout Anywhere

I know this is not related to the article, but is there a new version of Optimize Press coming soon? Like Optimize Press 3? Just wondering when some of the major feature updates are coming out.

    • Jason Cooke

Good Leads David. Sorry to be negative, the only issue is when a host sells up like Heart Internet who have become a shambles, then it’s problem time. Back to the article, great recommendations. :-)

      • David Frosdick

Yeah, I couldn’t agree more! This happened with some of big shared hosts a few years back and their service levels dropped.

The only good thing I see, is that it opens up the competition allowing better companies to step in and serve us.

    • Bob Richardson

I currently use Siteground, Cloudways, and Hostgator. All 3 have pros and cons for me. I design and host client sites and have many of my own sites.

Siteground is very good and reasonably priced, but to add multiple sites you need to use add-on domains, which do not have their own cPanel.

Cloudways with Digital Ocean allows as many domains as you want. Their interface is OK. Speed is good. They don’t use cPanel or WHM so high learning curve. No email. They partner with Rackspace for email. So for clients that want email for several employees, I find cPanel hosting much easier. I’ve also had some issues with HTML sites and CRON jobs on Cloudways. I am working on those issues which are probably user induced. If not afraid of learning new things, you are fairly technically inclined, and email not an issue, Cloudways is pretty good.

Hostgator – I know, I know… I have about 50 sites on HG and keep planning on moving them, but am too lazy. They are smaller low traffic sites. Uptime has been very good. No client complaints. Support is very poor. Fortunately, I seldom need support. Cost for reseller plan is very low. If Siteground had a reseller plan, priced low, that allowed unlimited domains, limited by space and bandwidth, I would have all my sites there.

I have tried other “low cost” hosts over the years and find many make high promises but don’t deliver. Plus many low cost shared servers are black listed due to spammers using these low cost solutions, do their stuff then move on.

Thank you for this listing. I have added a couple to check out.

      • David Frosdick

Hey Bob, awesome update from you. Thanks for writing about your experiences. Clearly you have tested many of the top companies.

You are spot on about low cost host, newbies get sucked in by pricing but the servers are blacklisted or full of spammy sites. Good luck moving your sites off Hostgator! Cloudways have a migrator plugin that could probably help you move all those sites ;)

        • Mustaasam Saleem

Hey @David_Frosdick:disqus Thanks for mentioning our plugin :)
          Here is the URL.
          https://wordpress.org/plugins/bv-cloudways-automated-migration/

        • Bob Richardson

The migration plug-in is very good. I have used it on several sites. It makes moving wordpress sites very easy. It does not work on HTML sites. The lack of email has prevented me from moving more sites until I am sure I am staying with Cloudways.

          • David Frosdick

Yes the email thing can turn people away. For those that use third party email like Google Apps it’s not so much of a problem.

      • Mustaasam Saleem

Hello from Cloudways. Thanks for appreciation and your experience. :)
If you need any assistance, feel free to inbox me at mustaasam.saleem@cloudways.com

    • Pat Graham-Block

I recently switched to SiteGround from Hostgator. So far, I like the service. The only problem is they use SpamExpress and it’s very aggressive.

As a result, I have to constantly check the cpanel Webmail to make sure no important emails are being marked as spam. And therefore, not being forwarded to my gmail account.

So, the upside to using Hostgator is they have years of sophisticated spam protection,, under their belt. Without that, SiteGround teamed up with SpamExpress, which has a long learning curve ahead of it.

      • David Frosdick

Hey Pat! Thanks for sharing your experiences of the switch. Never thought of that.

    • Sergio Félix

I’ve used HostGator for years but whenever I want something a bit more serious, I have gone with DreamHost and SiteGround and both have been fantastic so far.

The one I do not recommend in using would be MediaTemple though. It was good in the beginning but as soon as you start having a few issues expect to pay some good cash for them to even look at your site’s health.

I’ve heard very cool things about LiquidWeb but I find their site way too geeky to really understand what the hell do I want to get.

I think they should dumb it way down but I’m probably not their target anyway, who knows? ;-)

      • David Frosdick

I used Dreamhost years back and tried them out since. Glad to hear you having good experiences with SiteGround!

        • Túlio Sandoval

SsiteGround is F* awesome! I´m not much of an expert and their support have saved me many times.

I am seriously thinking about going back to SiteGrounds. (My site is hosted in Brazil now, because I am Brazilian)

    • Josh Houghton

I’m currently with Bluehost, using their shared cloud hosting for business and running into a really odd issue. I have a really long OptimizePress sales page and it’s got to the point where it just isn’t saving.

I’ve tried editing the php.ini, using a .user.ini, increasing max execution time, max input vars and all that jazz and nothing is working. So at this point I can only assume it’s the host even though Bluehost has gone above and beyond to try and help me solve this issue.

Anyone here have any really long optimizepress sales pages they built on their hosting without any issues? If I’m going to move to a new host I need one that won’t give me this really odd saving issue I’m having with OptiimzePress even though all my settings are correct for optimizepress?

Please let me know if you do and what hosting your using. Thanks and great article!

      • David Frosdick

Hey Josh, might be worth reaching out to our support team. Provide as much info as you can. Also send us the page as a template and we could possibly test it on other hosts.

Unless you have broken the web and the internets longest sales page we can’t help much :)

        • Josh Houghton

Hi David, thanks for the reply. I’ll reach out to them and sadly I won’t be able to send the page as a template as it won’t allow me to export it. Everytime I try, nothing happens. I have no problem providing them FTP or whatever though. Tried everything from user.ini, correct settings, reinstalls, and nothing is working. I’ll send them a ticket. Thanks brother :-)

    • David Frosdick

Thanks for sharing that info Casual!

    • Rudi Zimmerer

I have INMOTION HOSTING, it is not so bad, good enough, The first year it was cheap and now they have increased the price … Optimizepress is working…

Do you have any other recomendations for hosting? I am currently hosting 4 small sites all built with OptimizePress on a VPS at HostGator. I tried SiteGround but they could only transfer 1 of the sites or charge me $100 additional to move all 4.

They told me that I could use an app but the app was not compatible with my VPS.

I have to get a new hosting service soon. Any other suggestions?
